Vlaggetjesdag (New Herring Day) 2024

Vlaggetjesdag
Every year on a Saturday in June, the harbour of Scheveningen transforms into a lively festival ground during Vlaggetjesdag (New Herring Day), a traditional Dutch celebration marking the arrival of the first Hollandse Nieuwe herring (maatjes). What began as a farewell for fishing boats decorated with flags has grown into a joyful public event attracting thousands of visitors.
What can you expect during Vlaggetjesdag?
A mix of tradition, maritime atmosphere and fun for the whole family:
- Tasting fresh Hollandse Nieuwe: the star of the day, freshly sliced.
- Colourful fishing boats: admire beautifully decorated vessels in the harbour.
- Maritime shows and demonstrations: from herring filleting to nautical crafts.
- Children’s activities: traditional Dutch games, puppet shows, face painting and more.
- Boat trips and harbour tours: see Scheveningen from the water.
- Live performances: enjoy sea shanty choirs, local artists and lively bands.
- Moustache contest: who has the most beautiful, longest or most unique moustache?
- 'Scheveningen Scene': meet traditional craftsmen and experience the atmosphere of the past.
