Every third Tuesday in September, The Hague is the stage for Prinsjesdag, the festive and official start of the parliamentary year. It's a day filled with royal splendour, tradition, and symbolism, during which King Willem-Alexander delivers the Speech from the Throne on behalf of the government.
What can you expect on Prinsjesdag?
- The Royal Procession: Around 13:00, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima make a royal tour in the Glass Coach from Noordeinde Palace via Lange Voorhout to the Royal Theatre. A spectacular sight that attracts thousands of visitors!
- The Speech from the Throne: Around 13:15, the King delivers the Speech from the Throne, outlining the government's plans for the year ahead.
- The Balcony Scene: After the speech, the royal procession returns to Noordeinde Palace. Around 14:00, the royal family appears on the balcony to greet the cheering crowds.
A Royal Day for Young and Old
Prinsjesdag is not only a political but also a unique cultural event that draws thousands of visitors to The Hague every year. Young and old gather to enjoy traditions, horses, hats, and a festive programme.
