• Where it is: carnival is mainly celebrated in North Brabant and Limburg; it is not a tradition on the Dutch coast of Holland.

• Supermarket: sells beer, wine and other drinks with less than 15% alcohol.
• Liquor store: spirits are sold in a slijterij (liquor store).
• ID: passport, ID card or driving licence; without proof you may be refused.

The bulb fields of the Bollenstreek bloom from late March to mid-May; your best chance of seeing tulip fields in flower is in the second half of April.

• Order: crocuses and daffodils come first (March), followed by hyacinths and tulips (April to early May).
• Weather: a cold or warm spring can bring the flowering forward or delay it by one or two weeks.
• Keukenhof: the famous flower park near Lisse is only open in spring; see Keukenhof.
• Tip: the fields around Noordwijkerhout, Lisse and Hillegom are best seen by bike; please stay off the fields, they are private land.
