Solleveld - Nature
The Solleveld dune area is one of the most special nature areas on the South Holland coast. It lies between Kijkduin, The Hague, Scheveningen and Ter Heijde, and is part of Hollandse Duinen National Park. Thanks to restricted access, it is remarkably peaceful here and you can walk through an almost unspoilt dune landscape.
What can you expect in Solleveld?
- Special dune landscape: Solleveld consists of old, decalcified dunes with dune grasslands, heathland, shrubs and sheltered woodland. This gives the area a character all of its own.
- Centuries-old oaks: One striking feature is the low, gnarled oak woodland. Shaped by the sea wind, the trees have grown small and twisted, giving the landscape an almost fairytale atmosphere.
- Infiltration ponds: The area contains ponds where water is naturally purified for the drinking water supply. At the same time, these ponds are important for birds, amphibians and insects.
- Rich nature: Because of the tranquillity, roe deer, foxes, rabbits and many bird species live here. In summer, parts of the dune area turn purple when the heather is in bloom.
- Quiet walking routes: Marked walking routes run through the area. During the breeding season, some sections may be temporarily closed, but usually a short walking route remains available.
- Protected nature area: Solleveld covers around 350 hectares and is part of the larger Natura 2000 area Solleveld & Kapittelduinen.
