Lighthouse Scheveningen

A visit to the Scheveningen coast isn’t complete without admiring the iconic lighthouse at the end of the boulevard.
What makes the Scheveningen lighthouse so special?
- Unique architecture: The tower is made of cast iron, has 8 floors and 159 steps, a striking twelve-sided shape and is painted in a characteristic reddish-brown colour.
- Impressive height and power: With a height of 49 metres and a light range of 29 nautical miles (approx. 53.5 kilometres), the lighthouse is visible far out at sea. Every 10 seconds, it emits two powerful flashes of light.
- Historic icon since 1875: Designed by renowned hydraulic engineer Quirinus Harder, the lighthouse has served as a beacon for North Sea shipping since 1875.
- National monument still in use: The tower is listed as a rijksmonument and remains operational today, remotely controlled from IJmuiden.
- Predecessor beacon: Even before 1875, a beacon stood here. It was raised in 1850 for better visibility. The current tower fully replaced it.
