Westduinpark - Nature

The Westduinpark is a large protected dune area between Scheveningen and Kijkduin. It lies directly behind the peaceful Zuiderstrand and forms a beautiful green strip along the coast of The Hague. Together with the adjoining Wapendal, the area is part of Natura 2000 and Hollandse Duinen National Park.
What can you expect in the Westduinpark?
- Varied dune landscape: During a walk, you pass high dunes, open sandy areas, dune grasslands, scrub, small wooded areas and damp dune valleys. From the higher dune tops, there are lovely views over the North Sea, Zuiderstrand and The Hague.
- Walking, cycling and going to the beach: Walking paths, cycle paths and several bridleways run through the area. Via various beach access paths, you can walk straight to Zuiderstrand, which is usually quieter than the beach near the boulevard of Scheveningen.
- Scottish Highland cattle: Scottish Highland cattle roam freely in the Westduinpark. These grazing animals help keep the dune area open. Always keep a safe distance, do not feed the animals and keep dogs well under control.
- Plenty of nature and birds: The dunes are home to rabbits, foxes, roe deer, bats and many different bird species. Near the Laan van Poot there is a small dune lake with a birdwatching hide, a pleasant spot to watch waterbirds.
Viewpoint De Vulkaan: A well-known high point in the area is De Vulkaan. From this dune top, you look out over the Westduinpark, Scheveningen and the sea. It is also a popular place to spot birds during migration.
- Traces from the Second World War: Scattered throughout the dune area are bunkers and concrete remains of the Atlantic Wall. Some have almost disappeared beneath sand and vegetation, while others are still clearly visible along the paths.
Practical information
- Entrance There is no central main entrance, but you can enter the area from several sides. Popular parking areas and entrances can be found near the Laan van Poot and Zandvoortselaan.
- Access: The park is public and free to enter.
