De Vulkaan - Observation point

De Vulkaan is one of the best-known viewpoints in the Westduinpark, between Scheveningen and Kijkduin. From this striking dune top, you have beautiful views over the dunes, Zuiderstrand beach, the North Sea and the skyline of Scheveningen.

What can you expect at De Vulkaan?

• Beautiful views: From the top, you have a wide panorama over the dune landscape, the coastline and, in clear weather, far along the South Holland coast.
• View of Scheveningen: In the distance you can recognise the pier, the lighthouse and the tall buildings along the boulevard.
• Distinctive dune top: The name De Vulkaan comes from the high, round and steep shape of the dune hill, which is slightly reminiscent of a volcano.
• Lovely walking spot: The dune top lies on walking routes through the Westduinpark and is easy to combine with a walk through open dunes, dune grasslands, shrubs and woodland.
• Nature and birds: Around De Vulkaan, you can hear songbirds and sometimes see birds of prey gliding above the dunes. In summer, flowers, butterflies and insects add extra colour.

A beautiful moment in every season

A visit to De Vulkaan is worthwhile all year round. In spring and summer, the dune area is green and full of flowers; in autumn, the views are often especially clear; and in winter, you can feel the rugged wind coming in from the sea. Around sunrise and sunset in particular, this is a beautiful place for photographs of the dunes and the coast.
